Documentary Drive

In order to bring about broader general interest in South Asian music, Sangeet has worked with renowned musicians to fund a documentary project cataloging the history and richness of the art. The use of the medium of video to spread knowledge and awareness not only lies at the very core of Sangeet’s mission, but could also help pique the curiosity of the younger generation of students and disciples across the globe. To this end, we have been in contact with numerous artists, producers, and cinematographers with whom we are shaping our thoughts and preparing to create this truly one-of-a-kind piece of work. The completion and dissemination of such a documentary would certainly be to the benefit of the Sangeet community, and music world as a whole, and we hope that having embarked on this project will be the impetus necessary to bring about a newfound appreciation for South Asian musical arts.

Sangeet Library

An effort to consolidate and add to Harvard’s vast South Asian musical resources by tapping into the troves of rare recordings and mansuscripts scattered throughout the world.

The task of creating the Sangeet library builds on two approaches: consolidation and addition. Harvard, with one of the world’s most expansive libraries has, as one would expect, many disparate collections devoted to South Asian music, which Sangeet has begun to work on pulling together under one name. In addition to Harvard resources and other easily available publications, there are myriad rare recordings and manuscripts scattered, over the course of decades and centuries, throughout the world. It is these which Sangeet hopes gather and categorize, to create a veritable repository of musical treasures. With Harvard’s backing and repute, we look to attract these rare artifacts into our collection, such that these gems are maintained and preserved for posterity with the utmost care. Though an ambitious project, Sangeet has been in touch with the great bastions of Carnatic music, including the Madras Music Academy. In addition, with the procurement of the necessary technological infrastructure to properly archive and store our growing library, Sangeet seems poised and ready to expand this project to new heights. Soon, we hope that Sangeet’s library will become a favorite resource of musicians and enthusiasts worldwide, a mainstay of the South Asian scholarly community, and ultimately, an added feather in Harvard’s proverbial cap.

Publications

Musician Directory

Musician Directory – A listing of Harvard solo artists, accompaniment teams, on-campus teachers, fusion groups and other important South Asian musical contacts for campus use

Sangeet has two new groundbreaking publications in the works. The first is a musician directory, which lists all individuals on campus available to perform at various events. Over the past two years, the demand for live performance at campus events has been steadily increasing, but there has been no source one could consult to request musicians. Sangeet’s musician directory will provide a collection of individual solo artists, accompaniment teams, on-campus teachers, fusion groups and other important contacts. We aim for the directory to be recognized and used as a one-stop resource for South Asian music.

Sangeet Journal

Sangeet Journal – Devoted to the scholarly and cultural aspects of South Asian music

The other publication Sangeet is beginning preliminary work on is a journal devoted to the various aspects of South Asian music. By highlighting scholarly trends, chronicling interesting advances, and increasing exposure to a wide range of well-known and up-and-coming performers, we look to have this journal be a wonderful way in which students and aficionados can keep abreast of the South Asian music world. It will include articles written for Sangeet by the musicians and scholars of our advisory board, editorials from the Sangeet officers, interviews with performers, pieces submitted from our membership, and reprints from other journals and magazines, with segments such as featured ragas, concert reviews, technical issues, advertisements for upcoming concerts and events, op-eds, cultural commentaries. We hope that this endeavor fills a niche that has been empty at Harvard, and the South Asian music scene as a whole.

We believe that as an organization with Harvard’s backing and repute, we will not only be able to attract these rare artifacts into our collection, but that their donors will entrust them to us with the knowledge that these rare gems will be maintained and preserved for posterity with the utmost care. Though an ambitious project, Sangeet has already contacted the great bastions of Carnatic music, including the Madras Music Academy and some initial procurements don’t seem too far off. Soon, we hope that Sangeet’s library will become a favorite resource of musicians and enthusiasts worldwide, a mainstay of the South Asian scholarly community, and ultimately, an added feather in Harvard’s proverbial cap.
